How To Use Magnetic Therapy To Treat The Pain Associated With Cervical Spondylosis?

What is Spondylosis?

Spondylosis (spinal osteoarthritis) is a degenerative disorder that may cause loss of normal spinal structure and function. Although aging is the primary cause, the location and rate of degeneration is individual. The degenerative process of spondylosis may impact the cervical, thoracic, and/or lumbar regions of the spine affecting the inter-vertebral discs and facet joints.

Lumbar spondylosis refers to any narrowing of the spinal canal. Cervical Spondylosis refers to a degenerative process of the cervical spine producing narrowing of the spinal canal producing compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots.

Causes and symptoms:

As people age, shrinkage of the vertebral disks prompts the vertebrae to form osteophytes to stabilize the back bone. However, the position and alignment of the disks and vertebrae may shift despite the osteophytes. Symptoms may arise from problems with one or more disks or vertebrae. Osteophyte formation and other changes do not necessarily lead to symptoms, but after age 50, half of the population experiences occasional neck pain and stiffness. As disks degenerate, the cervical spine becomes less stable, and the neck is more vulnerable to injuries, including muscle and ligament strains. Contact between the edges of the vertebrae can also cause pain. In some people, this pain may be referred (that is, perceived as occurring in the head, shoulders, or chest, rather than the neck). Other symptoms may include vertigo (a type of dizziness) or ringing in the ears. The neck pain and stiffness can be intermittent, as can symptoms of trapped nerves (radiculopathy). Radiculopathy refers to compression on the base of nerves that lead away from the spinal cord. Normally, these nerves fit comfortably through spaces between the vertebrae. These spaces are called intervertebral foramina. As the osteophytes form, they can press on this area and gradually make the fit between the vertebrae too snug.

The poor fit increases the chances that a minor incident, such as overdoing normal activities, may place excess pressure on the nerve root, sometimes referred to as a pinched nerve. Pressure may also accumulate as a direct consequence of osteophyte formation. The pressure on the nerve root causes severe shooting pain in the neck, arms, shoulder, and/or upper back, depending on which nerve roots of the cervical spine are affected. The pain is often aggravated by movement, but in most cases, symptoms resolve within four to six weeks.

Cervical spondylosis can cause pressure on the spinal cord. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal-- the area through the center of the vertebral column occupied by the spinal cord. Stenosis occurs because of misaligned vertebrae and out-of-place or degenerating disks. The problems created by spondylosis can be exacerbated if a person has a naturally narrow spinal canal. Pressure against the spinal cord can also be created by osteophytes forming on the inner surface of vertebrae and pushing against the spinal cord. Stenosis or osteophytes can compress the spinal cord and its blood vessels, impeding or choking off needed nutrients to the spinal cord cells; in effect, the cells starve to death.

With the death of these cells, the functions that they once performed are impaired. These functions may include conveying sensory information to the brain or transmitting the brain's commands to voluntary muscles. Pain is usually absent, but a person may experience leg numbness and an inability to make the legs move properly. Other symptoms can include clumsiness and weakness in the hands, stiffness and weakness in the legs, and spontaneous twitches in the legs. A person's ability to walk is affected, and a wide-legged, shuffling gait is sometimes adopted to compensate for the lack of sensation in the legs and the accompanying, realistic fear of falling. In very few cases, bladder control becomes a problem.

Magnetic therapy treatment of Spondylosis:

It is relatively easy to treat Spondylosis with magnetic therapy. As stated above the main causes of pain in spondylosis is muscle and ligament strains plus pressure in the nerves in the neck and spinal cord. Placing magnets around the area damaged by spondylosis will speed up the healing process in muscle and ligament damage and reduce the pressure on the nerves. Because much of the pain that is experienced from spondylosis is referred, this means the cause is in one area e.g. the neck ad the pain appears elsewhere e.g the arm and hand, you do not have to treat all of the painful areas individually. For example if you have spondylosis in the neck the swelling and pressure upon the nerves in the neck can cause pain, pins and needles and numbness to radiate down the arm and into the hand and fingers. There is no injury in the arm or hand but the pain is caused by the neck is felt there. By applying magnets to the cause of the problem, which is spondylosis in the neck, as soon as the symptoms in the neck have been relieved then the pain and numbness in the arm will reduce as well.

There are many magnetic therapy devices that can treat the neck, shoulders and back area. Although spondylosis is mainly thought of as a neck and shoulder ailment it is also possible to have lumber (lower spine) spondylosis. The treatment for lumber spondylosis remains the same to treat the area of injury with the magnets and any referred pain will also be reduced.

Common magnetic therapy treatments for cervical (neck)spondylosis are:

1. A magnetic therapy necklace or neck wrap. Most magnetic necklaces are higher strength than functional wraps. To efficiently treat widespread spondylosis that affects the neck, shoulders, head and arms, super strength magnets (2,500-3,000 gauss/250-300 millitesla) need to be applied. If a necklace or wrap is worn with a least 8 of these magnets the magnetic field will be able to reduce the symptoms in the neck plus the shoulders, head and arm areas with out any other magnets.

2. Magnetic therapy pillow pad. If a person is unable or does not want to wear magnets around the neck area, a magnetic pillow pad can be used as an alternative. The pads are placed into the pillow case and only used at night time. It is advocated that magnets are worn 24 hours a day 7 days a week until the symptoms are gone, but if they ca not be tolerated during the day then the best alternative is to use them at night time, as this is the time when the body enters its healing phase, so the penetration and uptake of the magnetic field is at its strongest during sleep.

Common magnetic therapy treatments for lumbar spondylosis are:

1. A functional magnetic therapy back strap or support. The strap or support needs to be placed directly over the area of damage. Magnetic straps tend to be narrow around 1.5 inches wide so they are very easy to wear. They can be placed low around the back over the hips to ensure they contact with low lumbar spondylosis, but they can also be worn high around the thoracic (chest) area in high lumbar or thoracic spondylosis. Most narrow straps have adjustable fastenings to give the wearer flexibility of placement. These types of straps are the most comfortable and easy to wear. How ever if the damaged area is around waist height a wider more supportive belt may be required, provide support whilst bending. Supports are most beneficial to people with an active lifestyle who make vigorous movements through the waist area, such as golfers and builders. Whether a narrow strap or a wide support is chosen the same rule applies it must be worn night and day until the pain has gone, so it is advisable to try both types of strap before purchasing.

IT and Us - The Segway and Human Balance

Late in 2001, a great deal of media attention was focused on Ginger, a.k.a. "IT" - a secret invention that the brilliant and eccentric inventor Dean Kamen had been working on for over a decade. Some reports said it would be an even bigger deal than the PC!

What finally emerged in early December was the Segway, a self-balancing "human transporter". It uses a combination of gyroscopes, tilt sensors and high performance motors - and vast amounts of computing power - to produce a scooter-like device that lets you travel over virtually any kind of terrain without toppling over.

As Kamen explains, "The idea is to put a human being into a system where the machine acts as an extension of your body. When you walk, you're really in what's called a controlled fall. You off-balance yourself, putting one foot in front of the other and falling onto them over and over again. When you use a Segway, there's a gyroscope that acts like your inner ear, a computer that acts like your brain, motors that act like your muscles, wheels that act like your feet."

Segway's performance has earned rave reviews, although its $3000 price tag may limit sales to industrial markets and the high-end consumer market.

The Segway is a wonderful reminder of our own ability to stand and move about with an upright posture. The Segway's design is impressive all right, but what's even more amazing is the design of our body that allows us to go about life without falling over. After all, we are tall, relatively thin creatures with a high center of gravity resting on two rather small feet.

Why on earth don't we just keep falling over? How do we stay upright?

A large part of the answer lies in the way our head is balanced on top of our spines and an ingenious structure that allows for stability - our heads don't easily detach from our bodies! - and for flexibility - our heads can move quickly and easily in response to changing circumstances.

As Joan Arnold, a teacher of the Alexander Technique in New York City writes: "... when the neck muscles do not overwork, the head balances lightly at the top of spine. The relationship between the head and the spine is of utmost importance. How we manage that relationship has ramifications throughout the rest of the body. As the boss -- good or bad -- sets the tone for an organization, the head / spine relationship -- compressed or free -- determines the quality of the body's overall coordination.

"Our neuromuscular system is designed to work in concert with gravity. Delicate poise of the head sparks the body's anti-gravity response: a natural oppositional force in the torso that easily guides us upward and invites the spine to lengthen, rather than compress, as we move. Instead of slouching or holding ourselves in a rigid posture, we can learn to mobilize this support system and use it wherever we go -- in the car, at the computer, in the gym."

But this elegant design only works well if the muscles in our necks are free of excess tension. And unfortunately, as we go through life, many of us develop tension in our necks and other parts of our body, that interfere with both our upright posture and our ability to use our body as it was designed.

You can easily see this for yourself if you take a look at just about any group of adults running or jogging and compare what you see to children running about at play. More often than not, the adults will be tightening their faces shoulders, arms - and of course their necks. Most small children will be running about with ease and poise.

The harmful posture and movement habits many of us acquire as we grow up can come about for a variety of reasons: the unconscious imitation of adults in their lives who themselves carry excess tension, bad school furniture design or stressful family situations, to name but a few.

A machine like the Segway doesn't have to face these kinds of problems. If something happens to affect its functioning - perhaps a motor or computer failure - it's quickly fixed by repair or replacement.

For us, it's more complicated. We can't just go out and order a new neck when our old one becomes excessively tight. But we can use our intelligence to assess the situation and learn how to release the harmful posture and movement patterns that have crept into our lives.

There are a number of somatic teaching and therapeutic processes that can help us restore the grace and ease of movement we had as children. The one I'm most familiar with is the Alexander Technique. Taught for over a century, it has a well-deserved reputation for helping people improve the quality of their physical functioning.

Segway is an Anglicized version of the musical term segue which means transition. The Alexander Technique is really about learning how to adapt to changing circumstances - moment-by-moment transitions - in the most efficient way possible.

The photos you see of me that appear on my website were taken within the past couple of years and with some fluctuation, I have maintained this body for most of my life. I am healthy, trim, fit and look 20 years younger than my years. However, I come from a "fat" family. My mother wasn't overweight...she was obese, and when she died in the 80s, she was just a few years older than I am now. I won't give details about my younger sister - she's gone, too. And don't think I can't gain weight easily. Oh, yes I can, but my mind won't let me. It has been conditioned too well to keep me fit and healthy. I don't think about what I have to do to maintain that, it does it for me - I lift weights, I eat healthy foods and can indulge in fattening foods sporadically without repercussion. Automatic pilot. Will this technique work for you? I saywhat have you got to LOSE? Body back guarantee.

The whole point of the subconscious conditioning is to bring our consciousness to the point of acceptance that we already are where we want to be. Then the subconscious is compulsive and will intuitively guide us to the right foods, exercise, whatever it takes to fulfill that vision. But we must give the mind the right message.

The subconscious mind technique does not "replace" your healthy eating habits. It creates them! That's the whole idea. The subconscious is the seat of habit. And of intuition. With the right mindset, your healthy eating habits will become just that - healthy "habits" - instead of the compulsively unhealthy ones.

This is not a diet. This is the natural way we are created to use our minds - constructively and in alignment with Universal laws.

So again, we use our minds to accept the idea, thought and picture of a fit, healthy person at his/her ideal weight. Once that idea is instilled in the mind, you will automatically be guided and directed to all that is necessary for you to fulfill that idea. You will just intuitively want the right foods and pass on the wrong ones. You will adopt the proper exercise habits. You will be guided to the right coach or nutritional information to manifest your subconscious idea. It must happen because that is the law - the nature of mind. Mind will always create according to the seed thought.

Speaking of exercisein my opinion, one of the greatest exercises in the world for getting the metabolism in gear is putting on good cushiony running shoes, going outside and just walking fast -- a couple of miles of fast walking. Weight lifting is fantastic for replacing fat with muscle, and for heart and bones, especially for women. But I understand not everyone is into or ready to lift weights. And we still need that aerobic workout. So get outside and start walking. That's an addiction you will love to have. When you start releasing those endorphins, the whole world looks better.

Important Footnote:

If you have a lot of weight to lose, your subconscious mind may not be able to accept that you can be your ideal weight all at once. The important thing here is to not set up resistance or an argument in the subconscious. So the following is a good method to use to prevent this.

Pick a weight that you feel that you can accept at this time, one that feels believable. For example, if you now weight 180 pounds and your ideal weight is120, that's a very big leap of faith to accept. So you might use 150 pounds as the target number that you suggest to your subconscious mind as you fall asleep. That is more believable at this point in time and will be more readily accepted by the mind. When you do reach your goal of 150 pounds, you can then change your input to 120 pounds. You may also do this if you have to lose a lesser amount of weight.

The important thing to remember is that the information that is most believable will produce the fastest and greatest results. This same idea also applies to financial prosperity, but I will save that for another time. By the way, I have learned many of these things through brilliant new thought teachers, far ahead of their time. It is time for valuable esoteric knowledge to become mainstream. You can become your own case study in the meantime.

Will the 700 Mhz Band Bring Broadband to Rural Areas?

Parts of rural America have broadband internet access and I guess you could say it is available to everyone if you consider the satellite services which cover the entire country which are ridiculously expensive for the initial setup and monthly service. There also is a patchwork of local providers offering wireless internet services off of water towers and grain elevators and buildings. These services are limited in the amount of bandwidth they can offer, not because the wireless gear is not capable of high speeds, but because the actual t1s or t3s to provide the backhaul to the internet are so expensive.

The nice thing about this particular spectrum is it will go through trees, walls, and just about anything for a long distance from a central broadcast point. So the cost of deployment is reduced because one central broadcast station will cover a large area and the cost of setting it up and providing internet access is spread over more customers. This is all contingent upon local providers being able to gain access to the spectrum in their area.

Google started a discussion about this spectrum and tried to influence the FCC to require the purchaser of the spectrum to provide access to third parties at wholesale prices. I am not sure what wholesale prices means but to a company like Verizon it means another chance to gouge anyone who wants put up the amount they will arbitrarily come up with.

I think if some company is going to rent a piece of this spectrum in their area it should be cheap, cheap to the point it is a negligible expense in the operation of an ISP's costs to provide internet access. The telcos like to promote themselves as service providers. If one of them gets this spectrum let them do a real service to this country and provide cheap access to everyone who is willing to do something valuable with the spectrum in their area.

Each election cycle politicians have spouted crap about bringing broadband access to rural areas. First of all, I do not think they really know anything about the business and the technology. Secondly, they have ignored the large group of small companies that have already been providing broadband access in rural areas. Finally, they have been all to happy to take money from telcos that maintain a stranglehold on access out to the internet by charging too much for broadband circuits to carry rural traffic to the internet.

Decorative Concrete Techniques

Plain grey concrete is drab and has little if any aesthetic appeal. There are numerous techniques now available to enhance the appearance of a poured concrete slab. These processes can be used on any concrete slab around pools, patios, walkways, and driveways. It should be noted that with the possible exception of the exposed aggregate technique, all other decorative concrete techniques rely on a solid finished surface. If you have areas of concrete that are flaking, these areas should be repaired prior to adding the decorative finishes.

Stamped:

Stamped concrete uses a negative template, usually made of steel or fiberglass to place a pattern into wet concrete. The templates produce a variety of shapes, forms, and textures and are designed to have the appearance of tile, wood, flagstone, brick, pavers, and stone. A vast array of decorative colors, specifically made to blend with concrete are available. The colors are either mixed into the concrete before it is poured or dusted on the surface on site.

Stamped concrete is generally less expensive than the real product, yet if properly installed, it is difficult to see the difference. One of the biggest advantages to a stamped concrete slab is its stability. Where individually laid flagstone, bricks, and pavers have a tendency to shift and heave, the stamped concrete slab is a single entity.

The technique of stamping concrete provides it with the ability to not only blend with other architectural features but to enhance the overall landscaping project. Complex designs can be etched into the concrete giving any property a unique appearance.

Engraving:

Engraving is one of the most common techniques used to update or enhance an existing concrete slab, be it a driveway, walkway, or patio. Although there are many treatments for a freshly poured concrete slab, only a few of them can be used on old concrete. By using engraving, it is not necessary to demolish an existing concrete slab in order to get rid of the bland, grey appearance.

By using engraving, you can produce elaborate patterns, such as pavers or brick at a fraction of the cost of the actual material. Once the concrete is engraved it can be stained which adds look alike coloring to the finished project. The visual and decorative possibilities are only constrained by your imagination

Exposed Aggregate:

In either case, there are three different methods of exposing the aggregate within the concrete: sandblasting, chemical treatment or by water pressure.

The amount of the aggregate to be made visible is controlled by the amount of sandblasting or water used to expose the material. The exposure can be light or heavy depending on the desired visual effect. A single concrete slab can have light areas and heavy areas, creating unique textured patterns.

Adding a color to the concrete when it is produced at the plant or by applying it to the wet concrete after it has been poured is a technique often used to enhance existing colors around the property, such as stone, stucco and roof materials. Only use color enhancements that have been formulated to work with concrete.

Saw and Grove Patterns:

With the use of a concrete saw or hand tool it is relatively easy to create intricate patterns in the concrete. It is common to stain the concrete with different shades of coloring to create a flagstone or other enhanced visual effect.

This is an excellent method of hiding the cracks in the surface of a concrete slab.

Staining:

Unlike coloring, where the dye is added to the concrete in its wet state, either at the initial production of the product or on-site, stain is used to color concrete that has already cured and is hard.

Stain can be used on concrete that has been previously colored to change the color or it can be used on concrete in its natural grey color. Stains can be used on interior surfaces such as basement floors or on exterior concrete work. Because the stain reacts differently to each of the concretes inherent minerals the resultant is a visually appealing mottled effect.

Only use stains that have been formulated to work on concrete. Always clean all dirt and grime off the concrete to be stained before application.
